Interior Design Trends for Innovative Commercial Spaces in 2023

The Year 2023 promises to be a year where we will see traditional, tried and proven commercial interior design trends in use alongside a few new design influences. Sustainable design continues to gain momentum, while all things that enhance the flexibility of use, easy adoption of technology that helps people communicate, and user personalization of space are among the top trends for commercial spaces in 2023. Opportunities abound for interior designers to use commercial flooring choices as a source of design innovation in 2023.

Sustainable and eco-friendly design: As businesses become more aware of their environmental impact, many are looking for ways to reduce energy consumption and promote sustainable materials and practices in their commercial spaces.

In 2023 many commercial flooring brands offer carbon neutral and healthy product options.  For example there is Interface’s Carbon Neutral Floors Program with PAS 2060 certification, and Tarkett’s Powerbond®️ RS which is the first soft surface commercial flooring to be certified as asthma & allergy friendly.

Biophilic design: The incorporation of natural elements such as plants, natural light, and organic textures is becoming increasingly popular in commercial spaces. This helps to create a more relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, and also improves the overall health and wellbeing of employees and visitors.

A great example of the biophilic design trend in commercial flooring Mohawk’s Lichen Community modular carpet collection – with textures and styles reminiscent of moss, bark, and stone, that in the words of Mohawk designers “connects us to a more restorative, climate positive future”.

Flexible and modular design: With the rise of remote working and flexible office spaces, businesses are looking for ways to create versatile and adaptable interiors. Modular furniture, moveable walls, and other flexible design elements are becoming increasingly popular.

Commercial flooring products play an important role in defining space and assuring that other flexible design elements can be fully utilized.  A great example of this are today’s commercial sheet vinyl products from Armstrong, Gerflor USA, Mannington and others. Available in a full range of colors, commercial sheet vinyl and rubber flooring products can be crafted into any design to create artistic walkways, furniture groupings, and other defined spaces in a host of commercial spaces ranging from education to healthcare.

Technology integration: As technology continues to play a big role in the workplace, businesses are looking for ways to integrate it seamlessly into their commercial spaces. This includes things like smart lighting, touchless controls, and other high-tech features.

We don’t always think of commercial flooring as a technology play when it comes to interior design. But consider the high-tech features of J+J Flooring’s Kinetex® line of soft-surface flooring tiles. They don’t even call it carpet, rather in their words “Kinetex® is an advanced textile composite flooring”. Installed like carpet and available in rich colors and patterns, the technology behind this innovative product provides one of the highest Noise Reduction Coefficients available and is highly breathable to effectively support the transmission of subfloor moisture vapor.

Personalization and branding: Companies are looking for ways to make their commercial spaces reflect their brand identity and values. This includes things like custom artwork, unique lighting fixtures, and other elements that help to create a unique and memorable experience for visitors and employees.

Commercial flooring design now includes multiple options for personalization and branding. Consider Shaw Contract’s Foundry. Available on the Shaw Contract U.S. website, Foundry is an interactive online design tool where you can “experiment with carpet design, any time, any place.”

Interior design trends and the options that fully integrate commercial flooring into the overall design will favor the innovators 2023.  Don’t be afraid adopt and use new methods, ideas, and products as a way to differentiate your designs while delivering spaces that enhance user experience.
